Every now and then, a camera comes along that completely captures the imagination of professional and amateur photographers alike. Canon’s latest offering, the EOS Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D, is one such camera. Recently, I had the pleasure of testing it out on an assignment in beautiful Cancún, Mexico, where I was tasked with capturing the cover shot for Plaza Magazine. Over the course of my time with the camera, it has left an indelible impression on me, and I am eager to share my thoughts on its features, performance, and overall value.

When using live view or shooting video, the camera utilizes Canon’s well-regarded Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology, which offers smooth and precise focus transitions between subjects. This was particularly useful when capturing video clips of the lively street performers and local wildlife.

The camera is capable of recording 4K UHD video at 24 frames per second (fps) and full HD 1080p video at up to 60 fps. While the camera lacks some of the advanced video features found on more expensive models, such as Canon Log or high frame rates for slow-motion capture, it is still more than capable of producing high-quality video clips suitable for most purposes. During my time in Cancún, I was able to capture a variety of video content, from sweeping landscape shots to intimate moments with locals. The camera’s 4K video quality was crisp and detailed, while the full HD footage offered a pleasingly smooth and cinematic look.
 
One potential drawback of the camera’s video capabilities is its 1.6x crop factor when shooting in 4K, which can limit the field of view and make it more challenging to capture wide-angle shots. However, this was not a major issue for me during my shoot, as I was primarily focused on capturing still images for the cover.
 

Ease of Use and Connectivity:

The Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D is designed with beginners and enthusiasts in mind, making it an exceptionally user-friendly camera. The camera’s guided user interface is a helpful addition for those new to photography, offering on-screen explanations of various settings and features.
 
The camera also offers seamless connectivity through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, making it easy to transfer images and control the camera remotely using Canon’s Camera Connect app. This feature proved to be particularly useful during my shoot in Cancún, as I was able to quickly review and share my images with the editorial team back at Plaza Magazine.

With a CIPA rating of approximately 1,070 shots per charge (using the optical viewfinder), the Rebel SL3 / EOS 250D offers impressive battery life for a camera in its class. During my time in Cancún, I never found myself running out of power, even during long days of shooting. This is a significant advantage for photographers who may not have access to a power source during extended shooting sessions.
